A Little Update

Good Morning!  After a good cry at my witch doctor's office, a little ice and a good night's sleep I am feeling better this morning  My calf still hurts and I am not able to run today I am trying to take it all in stride.

I saw Dr. Looney (my ART therapist) at 2 pm yesterday and started to cry the minute I walked in the door. He obviously get a lot of crying athletes because he smiled and took it in stride.  When I told him I thought that I wasn't a marathoner he started laughing and reassured me that he thought that I was a marathoner,  that I need a couple of days off and then he went to work.  His diagnosis.... a few little tears in my calf.  The plan...some ice and rest and then if I feel up to it 4 FLAT miles on the treadmill this weekend.  Fingers crossed that it will be better soon.  Chicago is 7 weeks away.

It looks like my area of NH might be getting a big hit from Hurricane Irene this weekend.  I will be spending the day trying to get the pool stuff in the pool house.  Hopefully my bum leg doesn't hold me back to much.  I told Trav that he was in charge fo the Lax goal and backboard.  I think that he is wondering where it is all going to go.  Siri was supposed to return home on Sunday with my mother, but it looks like they will be back on Tuesday.  There first day of school is on Wednesday.  This should be a great transition.

Happy Friday!  If you are on the East Coast stay safe!

Three Things Thursday....feeling sorry for Myself edition

1.  The day started with such promise.  A good nights sleep, a good fueling breakfast and my friends arriving for our 16 mile run.  It turned out to be not so great.  At mile 8 something went in my right calf, a small popping sound I would say.  We ran to my friends house, tried to massage it and use biofreeze and by mile 10 I was on the phone with Travis to come and get me.  He found me on the side of the road waiting.  I will admit a little teary eyed.
2.  I got home and immediately called my ART therapist, Dr. Looney.  A few more tears and his secretary said that he would see me at 2.  I think the tears are what got me in.  It is usually a couple days wait....(or maybe somebody cancelled.)
3.  The doubt is creeping in.  Is Chicago even an option anymore?  Do I keep training skip Chicago and just head for Richmond?  Do I give in and say maybe marathon training is not for me and I will stick to half marathons?  I just don't know.  What I do know is that my calf hurts and I am frustrated.

So anyway, I am letting it all out.  I am feeling sorry for myself now and hoping by tomorrow I will have happy news to report.

Falmouth Road Race

This weekend I ran the Falmouth Road Race with 11,000 of my closest friends.  What a race!  It was incredible.  The volunteers, the people lining the sides of the road, the music, I can't even begin to tell you. If there is one race that you do in New England this is the one.
The race is a point to point race.  You are bussed or ferried to Woods Hole and then run to Falmouth.  The scenery is incredible.  The first 2 miles are somewhat uphill.  You then come around a corner and you are on the beach.  The beach was the most serene part.  The sound of the ocean was so soothing.  After about 2 miles on the beach you come into town.  What an amazing feeling.  There were people everywhere.  Bands playing, people handing out water (and beer:) and a couple of Grateful Dead bands.  I was definitely energized by the crowd support.  My legs just started moving faster and for miles 5 and 6 I was right on target.  The last 1/2 mile is uphill.  I felt like I was on Cloud 9 and finished strong.  1:00 Garmin time, 1:00:59 chip time.  Not complaining....
Now....this was New Balance's first year sponsoring the race.  There were no shirts this year, you had to buy it.  I will say that this seemed kind of silly.  I still wear my original Falmouth Road Race shirt and was bummed that you had to shell out $20 for a cotton t shirt.  (I did, it was a pretty raspberry color.)  There also were problems with the busses I guess.  I had no problem.  I got on the bus at 7:30, made it to Woods Hole and even had time to go to Mass.  If you have 11,000 runners and you show up to get on the last bus at 8:45 you might have to wait a while for a bus.  Just my opinion.
All in all I had a great day!  A great lunch in Falmouth after and a quick visit to my friends cupcake store.  Yay Summer races!!!

Three Things Thursday...Falmouth Road Race

1.  I am running in my 2nd Falmouth Road Race this weekend.  My first one was in 2005.  I ran it in between Andy and Izzie.  It was hot and humid, but the race was beautiful.  The people were awesome and it all in all was a great race.  I am definitely excited.  Outfit picked out, I am picking up my number tomorrow and am going to check out the expo.  I don't know how long that I will be there due to having the 4 kids with me and my MIL is coming, but it is going to be fun none the less.  We are getting cupcakes after at my friends cupcake store.  The kids are over the moon.
2.  I am hoping to run it in a little over an hour.  My 10K last weekend was 55 minutes and I would love to be at an hour, but I don't know if that is happening.  On my long run this morning my hip started bothering me at about mile 6.  I pushed through to mile 11, but I am hoping it is just tight.  I will call my ART therapist tomorrow am to try to get in next week.
3.  They are saying it is supposed to rain.  Rain on the Cape in August usually = humidity.  Fingers crossed it is not going to be to bad.  I am NOT good in humidity.
Have a great weekend everyone....

Beach to Beacon

Saturday morning found my friend Gail and me up at 6 am for the ride to Cape Elizabeth, ME to take part in the Beach to Beacon 10K.  The race was started by Joan Benoit Samuelson, you might know her, she won the gold in LA in the 84 Olympics and she is from Cape Elizabeth.  We arrived and jumped on the shuttle to the start.  I was feeling good.  I had absolutely no expectations.  I am running the Falmouth Road Race next weekend so I was not going to do anything crazy.
The gun went off at 8:15 and it took us 3 minutes to get to the start.  We took off, the first mile was spent dodging people who started to close to the start and now couldn't keep the pace, we were surprised when we looked at our garmins and were at about an 8:50 pace.  Mile 2 is UPHILL.  It was nothing crazy, but it lasted a long time, then mile 3 was downhill.  I think it is about mile 3 that you go through the little center of town.  It was so moving.  2 firetrucks had the American Flag hanging over the road and everyone was cheering.  It definitely picked us up and we kept going.  After mile 3 we grabbed water at 4 and 5.  (there were water stops every mile which was nice.)  My water stop at mile 5 stunk a bit as water went up my nose that caused me to have an upset stomach at about 5.5.  I could not stop gagging and had to pull off and dry heave for a few seconds.  I sent Gail ahead and then kicked it into high gear for the finish.  My finish time was 55:10 garmin, 55:19 race time.  I was thrilled.  I secretly wanted to finish under 55, but honestly who is complaining.
This race is so well run, the refreshments after are great!  The towns people are great.  There was not a mile where there were not people cheering.  They really pushed us to keep going.  I will definitely do this race again and we hope to make it a girls weekend next year.
Now, I do have one complaint.  When we went to get our numbers on Friday at 2 pm they were out of medium shirts.  I can't stand when you don't get the shirt you ordered.  Really frustrating and poor planning on their part....but honestly that was our only complaint!
Now...on to Falmouth!!!

3 Things Thursday......

1.  I am officially get anxious about Chicago.  While I have been running it has been a little bit of a struggle.  My shin hurts, the kids are home 24/7 now and quite honestly my nerves are shot.  I will say I am a little OCD and am getting nervous that it is not going to be the race that I want it to be, but I don't even know what I am looking for.  My friend M told me to take a big breath and stop over thinking it.  Hmmm....good advice for me.
2.  I am running Beach to Beacon this weekend and am so excited.  I have never run the race before and don't have any big expectations.  I am just going to go out there and do my best.  I also want to try to get my picture with Deena Kastor and Joan Benoit Samuelson.  That would be exciting for me:)
3.  Finally, I think that I am officially ready for my kiddos to go back to school.  Please don't tell me I am wishing the summer away.  I really am not, but I think that we need our routine back.  I need my house back and my schedule back.  Maybe 10 weeks off is to long.

and we're off to go uniform shopping for school.  Nothing like 4 kids at Educational Outfitters.  Always makes for a good time.
